The RealReal Review 2026: Authenticated Designer Resale at a Fraction of Retail?

Picture a burgundy MCM shoulder bag with a suede lining and gold-tone hardware, listed in Pristine condition. The estimated retail is $1,280. The price tag says $350. You add it to your bag, and a 20-minute timer starts, because there's exactly one of it and somebody else could be looking at it right now. That small rush is what shopping on The RealReal feels like.

The RealReal is a consignment marketplace for pre-owned luxury fashion, jewelry, watches, home and art, with every piece checked in-house before it's listed. We went through its authentication process, prices, shipping and returns in October 2026, so you know the rules before you fall for something.

The Story: A Luxury Resale Company Since 2011

On its sustainability page The RealReal says it has kept more than 50 million items in circulation since it was founded in 2011, and calls itself "a sustainable luxury company." President and CEO Rati Sahi Levesque puts the mission plainly: keeping items "in circulation and out of landfills." The company is based in the U.S. and runs stores and consignment offices from NYC (SoHo, Madison, Brooklyn) to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Houston and Palm Beach.

Consignors can receive up to 85% of an item's sale price, according to the site. Shoppers get brands like Chanel, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Cartier, Rolex and The Row, often far below original retail.

What Makes It Different: People and Tools Checking Every Piece

Buying secondhand luxury comes with one big fear: is it real? The RealReal's authentication page answers that with numbers and a process:

  • 100+ in-house luxury experts, each with hundreds of hours of training in specific brands and categories like jewelry, watches, bags and vintage. The company says it physically examines every item.
  • Over one million items a month pass through its authentication centers.
  • A deep data library: 13 years of information on more than 37 million authentic items and over 250,000 inauthentic ones it has kept off the market.
  • TRR Shield® flags brands and styles most likely to be counterfeited so they get extra attention, and TRR Vision® takes microscopic photos of every angle to compare against its database.
  • XRF machines read the exact metal alloys in jewelry, watches and hardware.

Each listing also shows a condition grade (Pristine to As Is) plus notes like "minor wear at soles," and often estimated measurements, so you can judge a piece before you buy it.

Shopping for a bag? Read this first

Handbags are final sale on The RealReal unless you buy its optional XCover return add-on at checkout. That add-on lets you send back final-sale items within 7 days of delivery. Before you buy, check the condition notes and measurements (the MCM listing gives a 19.75" strap drop and 10" width). Then zoom in on every photo.

Clothing and shoes: fit is the real question

Listings give estimated measurements and sometimes fit notes, like "typically fit small, consider taking a size up." Compare them with something you own. Some full-price pieces can be returned (the Ferragamo boots were), but anything 40% or more off is final sale.

Jewelry and watches: where the testing matters most

This is where XRF metal testing and the brand's watch and jewelry specialists come in. Keep in mind that fine jewelry, watches and most Chanel and Louis Vuitton pieces are excluded from promo codes.

How much is shipping?

Standard U.S. shipping is $15.95 (3–5 business days) and express is $39.95. Curbside pickup is free at select stores in SF, LA and NYC.

Our Verdict

The RealReal makes luxury feel reachable: a Givenchy sweater for $150, a Pristine MCM bag for $350, sunglasses from Saint Laurent or Bottega Veneta for well under $200, all checked by a team with a serious authentication setup. Read condition notes closely, know which categories are final sale, and move fast when something speaks to you. Check our The RealReal deals page before you check out.
