Wrangler Review 2026: Is the 1947 Cowboy Cut Still the Jean to Beat?
Pull on a pair of stiff, dark 14.5-ounce jeans, run a belt through all seven loops, and drop the hem over a boot that's already scuffed from last weekend. There's a weight to that denim you can feel before you even look in the mirror. That feeling is what Wrangler has been selling since 1947, and in 2026 it still sits at the center of the brand.
But today's Wrangler is far bigger than one cowboy jean. There are $22.99 everyday Five Stars, high-rise Retro flares, sherpa-lined jackets, ripstop work pants and designer collabs that cost close to $300. We went through Wrangler.com's lineup, prices and policies in October 2026 to figure out what's worth your money and how to pay less for it.
The Story: From an Overall Factory to the Rodeo Arena
Wrangler's own history page starts in 1897, when 20-year-old C.C. Hudson left a Tennessee farm for Greensboro, North Carolina, and took a job sewing buttons on overalls for 25 cents a day. In 1904 he and his brother Homer founded the Hudson Overall Company. It later became Blue Bell, and in 1943 Blue Bell bought the Casey Jones Company, which came with the rights to a little-used brand name: Wrangler.
The turning point came in 1947. Celebrity tailor "Rodeo Ben" Lichenstein designed the first Wrangler western jeans, and rodeo cowboys Jim Shoulders, Bill Linderman and Freckles Brown wear-tested the 13MWZ. Wrangler says that same jean is still the official ProRodeo competition jean and "hasn't changed much" since. Today Wrangler is part of Kontoor Brands.
What Makes Wrangler Different: Denim With Real Weight and Real Specs
Plenty of denim brands talk about heritage. Wrangler backs it with spec sheets on every product page, which makes it easier to buy the right pair online. Here's what the listings say:
- Heavy, honest fabric. The Cowboy Cut Original Fit and the Five Star Premium Relaxed Fit both use 100% cotton denim at 14.5 oz, with no stretch. That's the stiff, rugged kind that softens with you over time, so you can wear it hard on a ranch or a job site.
- Built for boots and saddles. The 13MWZ has a high rise, seven belt loops to keep your shirt tucked in, fully felled side seams that lie flat "for a more comfortable ride" and a 16 3/4" leg opening that fits over boots.
- Stretch where women want it. The Retro Bailey High Rise Trouser blends cotton, polyester and 2% spandex in an 11 oz stretch denim, and the Lainey Wilson Pull-On Bell Bottoms use a high-stretch 10.5 oz denim with a pull-on waistband.
- A huge size range. The Five Star Relaxed Fit is listed from waist 28 up to 60, with inseams from 28 to 38. There are also Big & Tall and women's extended-size sections.
Every listing also shows the front rise and leg opening in inches. If you already own a pair you love, measure it and compare. That one habit removes most of the guesswork from buying jeans online.

Cowboy Cut or Five Star: the everyday question
Both use 14.5 oz, 100% cotton denim with no stretch, so the difference is the cut and the price. The Cowboy Cut 13MWZ has a high rise, seven belt loops and a boot-friendly leg, designed for time in the saddle. The Five Star Relaxed Fit is roomier in the seat, thigh and knee, built on what Wrangler calls a "U-shape construction," and costs $22.99. Buy the 13MWZ if you wear boots most days. Buy the Five Star if you want a comfortable work-and-weekend jean and plan to stock up. Select Five Star styles drop to $21 each when you buy three or more.
For women: Bailey, BESPOKE or Lainey Wilson?
The Retro Bailey family ($79.99) is Wrangler's high-rise western line in trouser, flare, bootcut and wide-leg shapes, with "W" stitched pockets and a logo patch. BESPOKE jeans ($74.99) come in high-rise trouser, flare, bootcut and slim straight versions. The Lainey Wilson x Wrangler pieces are for the bold look. The Pull-On Bell Bottoms have a 34" leg opening, a slimmer knee and the singer's embroidered "LW" initials on the waistband. Buy them if you'd rather make an entrance than blend in.
Beyond jeans: jackets and cargo pants
The Western Sherpa Lined Denim Jacket is cut from 14.75 oz prewashed cotton denim, with snap-flap chest pockets, side hand pockets and a sherpa lining for cold mornings. For the outdoors, the All Terrain Cargo Pant is 96% nylon and 4% spandex. It's listed as lightweight, moisture-wicking and UPF 30, with zip side pockets and a cell phone pocket, so your keys and phone stay put on the trail.

Wrangler FAQ
How do Wrangler jeans fit compared with my current pair?
Every Wrangler product page lists the fit, rise, front rise in inches and leg opening. For example, the Cowboy Cut Original Fit has an 11 7/8" front rise and a 16 3/4" leg opening. Lay your favorite jeans flat, measure them and compare before you order.
Do Wrangler jeans stretch?
It depends on the line. Product pages label each style "No Stretch," "Some Stretch" or "High Stretch." The 13MWZ and Five Star Relaxed Fit are 100% cotton with no stretch. The women's Bailey trouser has some stretch, and the Lainey Wilson Pull-On Bell Bottoms have high stretch.
How much does it cost to return Wrangler jeans?
Returns started on or after April 10, 2026 carry an $8.49 return processing fee, deducted from your refund. Size exchanges in the U.S. have no exchange fee.
Can I pay in installments?
Yes. Wrangler.com offers Klarna at checkout, which splits an order into 4 interest-free payments taken every two weeks.
Our Verdict
Wrangler is still the jean you buy when you want denim with some weight to it. Heavy 14.5 oz cotton, specs you can check before ordering, and a 1947 cowboy jean that's barely changed. The Five Star line makes it affordable to stock up. The Bailey, BESPOKE and Lainey Wilson styles give women a western look with modern shapes, and RIGGS covers the work crowd. Just plan around the $8.49 return fee by using free size exchanges, and check our Wrangler deals page before you order so you catch the current multi-buy.
