Levi's Review 2026: Which Fit Number Is Yours, From the 501 to the 541?

Close your eyes and think "jeans." Levi's own product page bets you pictured a pair of 501®s, and it's probably right. Straight leg, button fly, a little stiff on day one, then shaped to you by day thirty. Some pairs end up as cut-offs years later because nobody can bear to throw them out.

Levi's® has been making that kind of denim since 1873. In October 2026 levi.com sells every fit, from the original 501® to baggy 578™s and the Ribcage, plus trucker jackets, a free-to-join Red Tab™ program and auto-applied sitewide deals. Here's what to buy, how the fits differ and how to pay less.

The Story: Gold Rush Workwear Turned Global Uniform

According to Levi Strauss & Co.'s About page, Levi Strauss, an immigrant from Bavaria, opened a dry goods company in San Francisco in 1853, at the height of the California Gold Rush. He and tailor Jacob Davis combined copper rivet reinforcements with tough denim, and in 1873 they made the first manufactured waist overalls. Today we call them blue jeans.

The company says it now has some 500 stores worldwide and sells in more than 100 countries. Signature by Levi Strauss & Co.™ and Beyond Yoga® are part of the same family. Levi's also runs Levi's® Tailor Shops for hemming, tapering, chain-stitch embroidery, patches and repairs like sashiko and darning, and a resale site, Levi's® SecondHand.

What Makes It Different: A Number for Every Body

Levi's gives its fits numbers, and each one means something specific. On levi.com, every pair also lists its rise, knee and leg-opening measurements, so you can compare before you buy:

  • 501® Original: the original straight fit with a button fly, regular through the thigh, in classic non-stretch 100% cotton denim. In a size 32 the front rise is 11¼" and the leg opening 16".
  • 541™ Athletic Taper: extra room in the seat and thigh, then a taper from the knee, made for muscular legs. The pair we checked is Levi's® Flex Eco stretch denim (70% cotton, 28% TENCEL™ Lyocell, 2% elastane).
  • 505™ Regular, 550™ Relaxed, 559™ Relaxed Straight: the roomier men's classics, each $74.95.
  • Women's fits like the Ribcage, Wedgie, 501® '90s, 725 High Rise Bootcut and the 311/315/318 Shaping styles.

You can also filter by stretch level (no stretch, low, medium, high), closure (button fly or zip fly) and fabric, including selvedge, dobby, twill and linen. The 541™ we looked at carries a "Hold the H2O" note, meaning it was made using recycled water.

501® Original vs. 541™ Athletic Taper

The 501® is rigid, 100% cotton and button-fly. It starts firm and molds to you over time, so pick it if you want a pair that ages with you. The 541™ uses stretch denim with extra room in the seat and thigh and a narrower ankle. If you squat, climb stairs all day or carry muscular legs, that's the one.

Ribcage or 501® '90s for women?

The Ribcage family comes in wide-leg, straight ankle, straight full-length and flare versions, all at $110. It's the line to browse if you want options in one family. The 501® '90s has a classic mid-rise, a button fly and a loose straight fit through hip and thigh, in non-stretch denim blended with TENCEL™ Lyocell (79% cotton, 21% lyocell). Levi's own tip: size down for a slimmer fit, or try the 501® Original if you want it less loose.

How to get the length right

Waists on men's jeans run from 24 to 58 depending on the style, and lengths from 28 to 40. If your size isn't quite perfect, the Tailor Shop can hem, taper or adjust the waist. Red Tab™ members get complimentary hemming on jeans on the day of purchase or pickup at a Levi's® Tailor Shop.

Levi's® FAQ

Do Levi's jeans run true to size?

Product pages show a "Customers say" fit note (the 501® and 541™ both said "True to size" when we checked), plus model sizes and rise, knee and leg-opening measurements. Rigid, non-stretch styles like the 501® feel firmer at first than stretch styles.

What's the difference between the 501® and 505™?

Both are regular through the thigh with a straight leg. The 501® has a button fly ($84.95), while the 505™ has a zip fly ($74.95).

Can I return online orders in a store?

Yes, at any Levi's® location in the country of purchase. In-store returns of online orders are free and refunded the same day.

Is Red Tab™ free?

Yes. Joining is free and includes points, free shipping on orders over $75, free returns within 30 days, early access and birthday points.

Our Verdict

Levi's® is still the place to buy jeans that do exactly what their number promises. Buy the 501® Original if you want history in your closet, the 541™ if you need room to move, or the 501® '90s if you want a loose, vintage feel. Join Red Tab™ first. It's free, and it brings free shipping from $75, points and free hemming. Check our Levi's® deals page before you order.
